Cats (2019)

Saturday morning, 12/28/19 1:43 AM. I have to say I was put into such a state of shock and annoyance by Cats that I really cannot say I hated it but I know it is a failure. Neither the acting, dancing or singing is allowed to breath (this was the same with the play, but in a film one should...nevermind...). It seems as if everyone involved had a plane to catch after every stop-motion rendering.

Songs (scenes) are stitched together so densely that the affect is hallucinatory. The film is so filled with nothingness (i.e. the very limited plot) that the nothingness becomes a fog of complicities. You will question what you are watching is either a total joke or an act of god to stop adapting musicals into film.

The reprise of "Memories" is ultimately disappointing. The film thinks it has earned the emotional weight needed for the tune to matter but has very little significant meaning. After the song ended, silently I thought, "Go fuck yourself movie! You never earn this..." On the plus side, I have to say they went for it. They crashed into that proverbial brick wall at a hundred and thirty miles per hour with a smile on.

The acting is not terrible (but the very different acting styles do not always work for the text) and the effects are pretty impressive (I watched version 2.0) but the end result is very frustrating. I do not know why this exist. The evisceration this film has received is unwarranted but is somewhat expected given its previous broadway loathing.
