Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is a puzzle of mismatched emotional pieces and action story bits that do not fit. The shills on social media during the early reactions used words such as “Epic,” “Emotional,” “Amazing,” "Complex" and “Blown Away,” the question I have- which version of this movie were they and other reviewers watching? The film starts with the death and somber procession for T'Challa with a brief intro/explanation which is wrapped up in less than 10 minutes of screen time. The remainder of the plot is driven by revenge and filled with death used to motivate other characters into further plot machinations. Nothing deep. Simply another MCU film building and setting up future sequels wrapped around the lie that this somehow honors a fallen hero. Risky, incorporating real mortal death into the plot for this could have been a complete disaster. This film is not that but only a little better than wannabe Shakespeare. A shame as Wakanda Forever is beautifully mounted and all around the acting is excellent. (Still, there are silly moments- Namor’s wings, the visual of Atlanteans mounting whales to travel towards battle in murky water and the prototype Ironheart looking more like the love child of Ultraman and Samus Aran). Outside of this, there is a minor origin story of a secondary character and the theatrical inclusion of a MCU / Disney plus streaming villain. I figured out what the payoff of the end/mid-credit scene would be as soon as the character appeared almost 2 hours prior. I feel for the cast, friends, family, and fans of Chadwick Boseman but this movie is a huge disappointment.
